18 comments:

  1. "Spunk" by Zora Neale Hurston. The story takes place in a small African American community and gossip plays a role with 3 characters Spunk, Lena, and Joe. Lena is an adulterer. Spunk is a brawny man and not afraid of anyone or anything. He takes what he wants. She is married to Joe he is weak and cowardly she looks at him with disgust. Spunk is masculine, asserts his authority, feared and says he will protect her and make sure she wants for nothing. Joe is timid, he's a pushover and doesn't take what is his, which is Lena. The main town gossips are two old men, Elijah Mosley and Walter Thomas, it was Elijah's final remark to Joe that set his course of action into motion. Joe goes to kill spunk but dies and later town says he's braver bc he knew Spunk had gun. Spunk winds up dying on the saw mill and in his dying breath he tells Lige that Joe did it, he pushed him in the back. The reference of Joe stabbing Spunk in the back and then pushing him in the back is ironic because Spunk stabbed Joe in the back. He took Lena and knew she was Joe's wife. As far as the dialect, it is the dialect of southern African Americans.

"Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor, takes place in the deep south, around the 1950's. Mrs. Hopewell uses people's bad qualities and turns them into something good. She is patient, optimistic, an older lady, and her confidante is a Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Freeman is the nosiest person, hard worker, very talkative and according to Mrs. Hopewell "good country people". Joy is 32. She thinks she is smarter than everyone, she has an artificial leg, she is heavier and acts very childish. She changes her name to Hulga to be spiteful. Pretty much the salesman, fakes them both. They both believe that he is so innocent, ignorant, dull and "good country people". In reality, he is conniving. He uses the whole bible salesman pitch to acquire what he wants. He is the definition of a backwoods southern person. In one bible, he has a cut out spot for whiskey, condoms, and a pack of cards. He uses his image to get what he wants and through deception he achieves this. He made Mrs. Hopewell think that he was innocent and poor Hulga thought she would be the one to take advantage of him and in reality he took advantage of her. Mrs Freeman ending statement, "Some can't be that simple, I know I never could" sums it up. Just because someone looks plain doesn't mean they are.

The story, "The Guest" by Albert Camus, takes place in Algeria. the author makes a reference to the actual Algerian War The main characters are Daru, the school master who has the task of deliver the Arab to El Amur, Balducci, his soon to be ex alliance, and the Arab.Daru is an honest man, who besides teaching the local children, lives a secluded life. He is basically protected by this Balducci and his army. He winds up offending Balducci because he says he refuses to take the prisoner to the headquarters. Arab is weather worn, hungry and feverish.he knows what he did and he accepts his soon to be punishment because in the end Daru gives him the option to either take the road to his freedom or his death and he chooses the road to El Amur. Daru watches him from above chose this road. He feels compassion for this man and at the same time is angered that he killed his brother and he couldn't escape before they found him. Daru misses the companionship he had with his fellow soldiers.

"Bartleby the Scrivener" Herman Melville.During the time it was written, they had no typewriters so they had to have scriveners take care of all the paperwork. The story is narrated by the actual lawyer who Bartleby works for. He is polite and probably a pushover because he can't seem to be rude.Turkey is in his 60's. The other scriveners are Ginger Nut and Nippers, who looks like a sailor. Bartleby at first comes in and wants to work but then eventually he gets to the point that he says he prefers not to do anything.

  2. The Guest: The Arab is never given a name. He was arrested in his village for killing his cousin. He is being transferred to police headquarters in another town, Tinguit. He is treated reasonably well by Balducci. The Arab never talks to any one. He does not say a word until after Balducci has left and Daru offers him a meal and a bed. No one knows why he killed his cousin. He grows kind of attached to Daru. The Arab then requests that Daru accompany him and Balducci to Tinguit.
Spunk: Spunk Banksis a saw-mill worker. He has a way with women. He is not afraid of the dangerous jobs at the saw-mill, He will carry on with a man's wife right in front of the man. The other men treat Spunk with respect. He kills a man named Joe. Spunk marries Lena. He is the one who made her a widow.
Bartleby the Scrivner: Bartleby is a scrivener. He is quiet and always happy. But he is getting old. Life is getting pointless to him. He ends up not eating because he just prfers not to, which end up killing him.
Good Country People: Joy is a girl who has an artificial leg. She was in a hunting accident where she lost her leg. He leg is her greatest vulnerability. When she takes her fake limb off, she feels entirely dependent on others. Joy also has a heart condition. She has to live on her farm with her mother because of this. Joy has a big deal of education which limits her from relating to her mother’s mindset. When she turned twenty-one she moved away from home. She changed her name to Hulga. Her altered name is a reflection of her self-image and personality.

  3. "The Guest" by Albert Camus, took place during winter. There were two main characters in this short story. Daru is a strong character who supports his own personality. He is a very generous man. Daru is a schoolmaster that didn't have any students because of the severe weather conditions. He also feeds the hungry during the times of their drought. Balducci seems like the person who always needs something to control or lead. Also, Balducci is kind at heart. He is the man who leads the Arab. He wants Daru to join the Arab, but Daru refuses and his proposal.

Herman Melville wrote the short story "Bartleby the Scrivener." The Narrator gets rid of all legal documents the rich folks want no one to see. The Narrator sees Bartleby and instantly takes pity on him, and that changes his character traits. Bartleby is a very quite, passive and seems like he never gets angry. He is a copyist. Turkey is an elderly man who is rivals with Napples. Through the story he stays drunk most of the time. He is a copyist as well. Napples works with Turkey. He is angry in the mornings and gets calmer in the evening. Napples and Turkey feed off of each other. When one is working the other slacks off.

The author for "Spunk" is Zora Neale Hurston. Spunk is obsessed in pleasing women. He loves women and showing that he is better than everyone else. Also, he wears some flashy clothing. Spunk works in the most dangerous part of the saw-mill. Joe is a nervous man who couldn't even hurt anyone. he couldn't even hurt Spunk when he found Spunk and joe's wife together.

Flannery O'Connor wrote "Good Country People." Mrs. Freeman works for the Hopewells. She is very friendly and always speaks her mind. Ms. Hopwell gets very annoyed by Mrs. Freeman really easy. She keeps trying to control her daughter's life. Hulga who is highly educated with a Ph.D. She lost her leg in an accident. She has an wooden leg.

  4. Herman Melville wrote the short story "Bartleby the Scrivener." The Narrator gets rid of all legal documents the rich folks want no one to see. The opening words of the story, ‘‘A giant of a brown-skinned man,’’ refer to the title character, Spunk Banks, a saw-mill worker with flashy clothes, a guitar, and a seemingless charmful way with women. His size is matched by his self-confidence, one could say he had a big ego. . His self confidence make him oblivious to others feelings. The other men show Spunk respect and look to him as a role model, admiring his courage.

Hulga is the dual dimension main character that goes through a complete change throughout the story. She changes her name to Hulga, an “ugly” name, to reflect her feelings about her injured body and self, as the name is the opposite of her real name “Joy”, as is her personality. The significance of Joy remaining conscious even though terribly injured as a child when “her leg was blasted off” indicates that Joy seems to have rejected her own body by choosing a life of intelligence and of the mind. As with her missing limb, Hulga’s “weak heart” operates as a symbolic as well as literal affliction

    Daru
he watches Balducci and the Arab approach the schoolhouse at the start of the narrative. The schoolhouse is his home, although with the sudden snow none of his pupils attend anymore. He spends the blizzard in his room, only leaving it to feed the chickens, get coal, or go to the shed. The administration has given him wheat to distribute to his pupils. During the draught he felt like a lord in his crude house because he was surrounded by complete and utter poverty. He is from this region, which is described as cruel, but he feels exiled anywhere else. Daru argues against delivering the Arab to Tinguit, and is plunged into a state of moral despair at the end of the narrative when he realizes that the Arab has chosen certain imprisonment.

  5. "Good Country People" was written by Flannery O' Conner. I find this story amusing because it is set in the south. Mrs. Hopewell is a character. Mrs. Hopewell sees people for what they are capable of. Mrs. Freeman is nice and outspoken. Hulga is the daughter.

"The Guest" was written by Albert Camus. It takes place in a foreign country, we are made to believe Algeria. They have a character who is simply called "the Arab", who is a very quiet person, he is being transferred amongst police stations. He is taken care of by Balducci, a guardian type character. Daru also plays a guardian type role.

"Spunk" was written by Zora Neale Hurston. This story is set in Africa. I picked up on these three main characters Spunk, Lena, and Joe. Spunk is a protecter, and a powerful person. Lena is unfaithful and is married to Joe. Joe is weak minded and easily manipulated.

"Bartleby the Scrivener" is written by Herman Melville. The narrator is a lawyer who has hired Bartleby. The narrator is a polite older man, he is very kind and considerate. Bartleby is ambitious at first, but he slowly becomes lazy.

  6. "Good Country People" was written by Flannery O' Conner. Hulga one of the main characters had her leg shot and had it removed when she was around ten because of a hunting accident. Since that time, Hulga stayed to herself most of her life, even while earning many degrees and even a PhD. Hulga finally decides to open up to a person, and it turns around and harms her.

"Bartleby the Scrivener" is a short story that Herman Melville wrote. The story tells of a lawcopyer named Bartleby. Bartleby was very active in his profession in the beginning but began to let his love for it diminish.

Albert Camus wrote "The Guest" which is believed to be set somewhere in the middle east. Daru is a teacher at a local village school has a big heart. One of the characters called "The Arab" killed his cousin, which makes Daru mad but he stil has a huge heart toward the Arab and shows him great compassion.

"Spunk" was written by Zora Hurston. Spunk seems to be a strong, burly man who is portrayed as a guardian of sorts. The girl Spunk first is noticed with is Lena, an untrustworthy lady who is married to Joe, a man who is very simple minded and thinks its all Spunks fault. Spunk has the charm that either you will be his friend, or you will hate him for what he has.

  7. “Good Country People” is written by Flannery O’Connor, she is from Georgia and writes a lot about religion. In this short story Mrs. Hopewell is judgmental, she is also Joy’s mother. Mrs. Freeman is Mrs. Hopewell’s neighbor and somewhat friend. She is very nosey and thinks she is never wrong. Joy was in a hunting accident where she looses her leg. She has a prostheses leg. She is very book smart yet has no street smarts. She also changes her name to Hulga, a very ugly name which symbolizes house she feels. Then there is the Bible salesman. He’s boring, simple, not judgmental, yet he ends up being a different person, he steals Joy’s leg. Joy had treated him like a moron so he takes her leg and this steels her pride. The main theme of this story to me would be “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”.

“The Guest” written by Albert Camus. The story takes place in Algeria. Balducci is a rule follower and gets aggravated easily. Daru is tender hearted, compassionate, he likes solitude, and he is trustworthy and very intelligent. He was a school master. “The Arab” kills Daru’s cousin. He hates him for this yet he still shows him compassion, he treats him as a guest.

“Spunk” is written by Zora Neale Hurston. The characters are Spunk, whom is not afraid of anyone or anything and says he’ll protect Lena and make sure she wants for nothing. Lena is an adulterer whom is married to Joe. Joe is very timid and a pushover. He doesn’t take what is his, which would be his wife Lena. There are two older men in the story Elijah Mosely and Walter Thomas. It was something Elijah said that gave Joe the initiative to get what’s his. Joe goes to kill Spunk, yet Spunk stabs him in the back. Spunk gets hurt on the saw mill and tell someone it was Joe who pushed him in the back. This is ironic because he actually stabbed Joe in the back.

“Bartley the Scrivener” is written by Herman Melville. The lawyer whom Barley works for is very polite older man. Bartley is very quiet and never gets angry. Turkey is rivals with Napples, they seem to work off of each other, or feed off of each other.

  8. Flannery O'Conner's short story, "Good Country People", takes place in rural southern America. The story centers around the life of three women. They are Mrs. Hopewell, Mrs. Freeman, and Hulga. Mrs. Hopewell contains all of the proper traits that a southern lady should. She is polite to a fault. This plays into her relationship full of tolerance with her neighbor and employee, Mrs. Freeman. Unlike her mother, Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga is full of anger and bitterness. She makes the mistake of assumig the bible salesman is unintelligent and is played for a fool by him.
Zora Neale Hurston's short story, "Spunk", also takes place in southern America. The story's namesake, Spunk, is a large, loud, bully of a man. He takes advantage of weaker people and does what he wants all the while daring anyone to look sideways in his direction due to his strenght and size. He reveals his true cowardace when he steals Lena away from her mild mannered husband, Joe. Joe eventually works up the courage to attack Spunk with a knife and is murdered.
Albert Camus' short story "The Guest" takes place in an isolated French territory. The main character, Daru, works as a civl servant and school master. He is compassionate with his own ideas about what is right and what is wrong. The prisioner which he is ordered to deliver makes the choice to face his punishment. This decision is also based on his set of morals.

  10. "Good Country People" was written by Flannery O'Conner and published in 1955. Joy, also Hulga, was in a hunting accident and lost her leg. Joy believes that she is smarter than everyone else in town. Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs.Freeman are very religious women, also very judgmental. The bible salesman is supposedly good country people, when he actually turns out to be a thief.

"Spunk" was written by Zora Neale Hurston and published in 1925. Spunk Banks is "a giant of a brown-skinned man." Spunk is a saw mill worker and full of self confidence. Joe Kanty is the opposite of Spunk Bank and lacking his self confidence.

  11. " A Jury of her Peers" was written by Susan Gaspell. It was by far my favorite short story we have read in class. It was about the investigation of a woman named Mrs.Wright. We are never told for sure if she killed her husband or not. It leads us to believe she did. In the end she has a few secret friends helping her out.

"Spunk" by Zora Neale Hurston is a short story about Lena, an unfaithful wife. She was married to a pushover named Joe.Lena cheats on her husband with Spunk. Joe tries to fight Spunk and is murdered. Lena eventually ends up all alone.

"The Guest" was written by Alber Camus. The setting is in Algeria. Daru is tender hearted and likes to be in solitude. Balducci gets angered easily and is a rule follower. The story is about about a prisoner who is given two options.

"Good Country People" is written by Flannery O'Connor a woman from Georgia. She wrote a lot about religion. In this short story three women are deceived by a con man bible salesman. It just proves that there are good and bad people everywhere and that whether you are good or bad is not determined by where someone is from.

  12. "The Guest" was written by Albert Camus and first published in 1957. The story takes place in probably Algeria. Balducci is on a horse and is supposed to transport a prisoner. The prisoner is called "The Arab". Daru lives in the schoolhouse on top of the hill and watches everything that goes on. "The Arab is the prisoner and treated as a guest.

"Spunk" is short story written by Zora Neale Hurston and published in 1925. It takes place in a small rural black community. Spunk is a giant man and is not scared of anything. Spunk takes whatever he wants when he wants. He takes Lena, which is Joe Kanty's wife. Joe is a coward and scared to stand up for himself. Lena is disgusted with Joe's cowardness. Joe goes after Spunk one night to get Lena back and ends up getting shot. In the end Joe's spirit pushes Spunk onto the saw cutting him up.

"Good Country People" was written by Flannery O'Connor and published in 1955. Joy is Mrs. Hopewell's daughter and has a fake leg due to an accident. Mrs. Freeman is a nosey woman and judges people on how they act. Joy is well educated and thinks she is smarter than everyone. The bible salesman turns out not to be Good at all. He is a thief.

"A Jury of Her Peers" was written by Susan Glaspell and published in 1917. Mr. Wright, Minnie Foster Wright's husband has been strangled. Mrs. Wright is to blame. Mrs. Wright loved to sing and had a singing bird. Mr. Wright supposedly took the bird away and it was found dead in the trashcan.

  13. In "Spunk," by Zora Neale Herston, Spunk Banks is the main character. He is a saw mill worker who is high class. He has nice clothes and has fine things. To go along with his huge ego, he has a certain charm about himself. He can "sweet talk" the ladies. All the men seem to idolize him and respect him.
In "A Jury of Her Peers," we are introduced to Martha Hale. She acts very cautiously and nervously through out the story. She shows courage when she finally decides to follow her feelings rather than the law. To me it seems like the people in her town wont let her be herself. She feels guilty for not going to visit Mr. Wright and in the end, she pieces it all together when she finds the song bird dead in the trash can.
Albert Gamus' "The Guest," is about an arab man who is not given a name. He is somewhat withered and feverish. He is being taken to El Amur by Daru, a school master. Daru offends Balducci by refusing to take the arab to El Amur. in the end Daru gives the Arab the choice of freedom or death. He choses El Amur.
Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People," takes place in the south. Joy, otherwise known as Hulga, is the main character. Joy, unlike her name, is not joyful. She is actually very bitter and has a bad attitude. She is like this because she is unhappy with her appearance due to loosing her leg in a hunting accident. She later changes her name to Hulga whcih is supposed to represent her "ugliness."

    ReplyDelete
  14. "Good Country People" written by Flannery O'Connor has many characters in this short story. Miss Freeman and Miss Hopewell are two of the main elderly women. They think that if a person lives in the south that they are "Good Country People". Joy/Olga's character is based on her past. The reason she is mean and uglye to people is because of what has happened to her. The Bible salesman seems nice at first but is very deciving to the ladies.

"The Guest" written by Albert Camus has three main characters. Balducci is a rule follower and gets angery very easily. He changed though the story. He is friends with the main character at the beginning of the story and ends up not being as close of friends with his commrad. The Arab is the slave in this story. He has good morals and that is what his character is built off of. Daru shows much compassion towards his "guest". He is also very trustworthy.

"A Jury of Her Peers" written by Susan Glaspell has at least five main characters. The first is Martha Hale. She is very OCD and she worries to much. Also she puts things off as well. Mrs. Peters is the second. She is the sheriff's wife. She tries to change the subject a lot in the story. Minnie Foster is the woman who is being accused of killing her husband. During the story it seeems like she really did kill her husband. The Sheriff, the attorney, and Lewis Hale all could not find any motives to why Minnie would do this to her husband. They also thought that the woman would not be able to think of a motive as well.

"Spunk" was unfortunately not in my book again. I am just wondering if I need to go the library and get it in case this happens again or what?

  15. "The Guest" by Albert Camus was inspiring because regardless of how your heart cries out to someone, we still have to do what is right. In this story Balducci is all about order and law. Even though he feels as if he should not have to transfer the prisoner, he does it anyway. This is a developing character all through the story by making friends with the guest that he has to travel with to the destination. He goes through his own thoughts and mind to look deep down to see if what he was doing was right or not, and end the end finds balance by placing the destiny in the hands of the prisoner.

"A Jury of Her Peers" written by Susan Glaspell brings out the main character by having her be subtle and quiet. This leads the reader to assume throughout the entire story that she had murdered her husband. All along the author describes her as acting as if nothing has occurred. She is a very flat character that is almost described as a subtle timid person. If the reader was to imagine this character they could see the same reaction on the character's face throughout the story.

"Good Country People" written by Flannery O'Connor was trying to show the Christianity of Mrs. Hopewell by including information of her love for the Lord and the way she does not judge, but the author shows the portrayal of judging a book by its cover by introducing to the story the bible salesmen, who carries around a knapsack of alcohol instead of selling bibles. Mrs. Hopewell is so convinced in this little world that she has created, that she is too blind to ever see the truth in this good country person.
In "Spunk," by Zora Neale Herston, I think we tend to forget the main character; in my eyes would be Lena. Zora Neale Herston writes in this short story as if Lena was a by stander, but I wondered if anyone else looked at it from the character Lena's perspective. She is the new girlfriend of the man that was assumed to be killed by her late husband's spirit that came back to haunt her new life. I think Lena should have stood up for herself and done things accordingly when Spunk came in to save the day. She may have been the cause for both murders, but in the story the author draws your attention to a black cougar that came out of the woods to stalk his prey.

  16. "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor. Joy/Hulga has an artificial leg. She lost due to a hunting accident. Her leg is important to her because without it she would have to depend on others to help her. She is very intelligent and has a Ph.D. She thinks she's smarter than everyone else, like they're beneath her. She changed her name to ugly because she feels ugly and she wants everything about her to be as well.
"The Guest" by Albert Gamus. Daru is a trustworthy, compassionate person who likes solitude. A prisoner is brought to him and he is supposed to transport him but he does not want the responsibility or guilt so he gives the prisoner the option to make his own decision. In the end the prisoner chooses to do the right thing and turn himself in, knowing Daru will be held responsible. Daru treats the prisoner like a guest.
"Spunk" by Zora Neale Hurston. Spunk is a man who isn't scared of anything. He does what he wants and doesn't feel like anyone can stop him or get in his way. He's respected by all, he's looked at like a role model. He has a way with the women. He is killed by the spirit of his new girlfriends deceased ex.
"A Jury of her peers" by Susan Glaspell. Martha Hale is a neighbor to the Wrights. She lost touch with Minnie years ago and regrets it dearly. Mrs. Hale finds Minnie's dead bird and assumes that her husband is responsible and that the death of the bird was Minnie's motive for killing him. She decides to keep this to herself because she has been in a similar situation and understands how Minnie felt.

  17. "Good Country People was written by Flannery O'Connor. One of the main characters in the story is Joy Hopewell. She was involved in a hunting accident at an early age, and lives without a leg. Because of this, Joy feels ugly and changes her name to Hulga. Hulga used her education as a crutch and a way to feel superior to other people. She reminds people that she has many degrees, and takes pride within this. The pride that she has is what lets the bible salesman outsmart her.
"Spunk" was written by Zora Neale Hurston. Spunk is the last name of a very cofident and cocky character. Within the story, Spunk steals another mans wife. Spunk feels like he deserves what ever he wants, and can take anyone or anything whenever he likes. He has no pity for the ex husband who tried to fight him. Spunk later dies from the spirit of the ex husband.
"The Guest" was written by Albert Gamus. One of the main characeters is Daru. Daru is a very trustworthy person, and is well known for being honest in the story. He is a great rolemodel and is headmaster at a school. He has to escort a prisoner though, that happens to be an old friend of his. Daru treats the prisoner as his friend and not as a murderer. Daru doesnt want to be held responsible for anything, so he gives the prisoner the choice to do the right thing.
"A jury of her Peers" was written by Susan Glaspell. Minnie Wright is whom the story is about. She is a very quiet person who the police can't find any evidence on for the death of her husband. There are two women who go into the house that Minnie Wright lives in, and they discover what Minnie must have went through. Minnie had nothing and was as caged as the bird who died.

  18. "Good Country People" was written and published by Flannery O'Conner in 1955. Joy who was in a hunting accident and lost her leg feels that she has superior knowledge over everyone else. However she changes her name to ugly because she feels that she is ugly and everything else about her should be too.

"A jury of her Peers" was written by Susan Glaspell. Minnie Wright is whom the story is about. She supposedly killed her husband but upon searching, the police find no evidence.
