In "The Yellow Wallpaper" one symbol would be the yellow wallpaper. I believe it symbolizes the women who is sick with depression. How the yellow wallpaper is stripped off in patches just like she is with her depression. I think that the yellow wallpaper is related to her or her pretend husband in someway.
In the short story "The Story of an Hour" one symbol that stood out to me was the open window. I would say that it represents how she would be free after her husband's death. That she felt trap taking care of her husband and not feeling happy.
"The Cask of Amontillado," one symbol was the whirlpool. I say, it would represent how he switched moods.
In the "Yellow Wallpaper" I thought that while the wallpaper itself might represent a divider or something between men and women, I found it interesting that the author chose the color yellow. To me yellow is reminiscent of cowardice such as used in the term "yellow belly," the author was possibly trying to say that the men in the story wanted to keep women cowards.
In "The Story of an Hour," both the open window, and the fact it was spring, seems to say it was a fresh new start for her.
This one probably isn't the most significant of symbols, but while reading the story "The Cask of Amontillado," I thought that the name "Fortunato" was interesting since, if I'm not mistaken from my Latin, means something to the sound of "clarify".
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a feminist who's second husband was also her cousin. She committed suicide after discovering she had breast cancer in 1935. Her most famous short story is "The Yellow Wallpaper". The main character fights to ignore the wallpaper's pattern at first but is gradually lured into an obsession for discovering the shape hidden within. This symbolizes her character's fight with possibly postpartum depression that eventualy leads to insanity.
After being orphaned at an early age, Edgar Allan Poe would later marry his cousin Virginia. The official cause for his mysterious death was listed as "congestion of the brain". In his short story, "The Cask of Amontillado", Poe uses a black silk mast to represent death. The court jesture's outfit to represent the foolishness of that character to leave the chaotic street carnival and allow himsel to be lured into the wine cellar. The carnival representing life and the deep wine cellar a tomb.
In Kate Chpin's short story the spring scene outisde the opened window represents the character's sudden possibility of freedom from her marriage. The story itself represents the role of woman as her husbands property in marriage at the time.
In "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut and lived from 1860-1935, described many feelings of depression in this story. The symbol here was the yellow wallpaper. She was disturbed by the yellow wallpaper indicating she denotes happiness. It is cheerful and she is in a deep depression. She writes alot about womans rights, it may be because she felt like post partum was stripping her from her womanhood.
In "the Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe, this short stories symbol in my opinoin is the catacomb or underground graveyard. The cask in this case, a barrellike container used for strong liquids, is the part of the story that intrigued me. The man was drinking away his sorrows which resulted in his death, underground. The alcohol is what killed him in his state of depression.
In "The Story of An Hour" by Kate Chopin, who lived from 1851-1904, was written about an unhappy marriage, or a state of unhappiness in her marriage, which the author is best known for writing about. The symbol here is the springtime. This is the representation of a new beginning or a fresh start.
All the stories above have depression in common. I think we all have states of depression. Some are worse than others. The severity of one occurence may affect another in a different way. I think it is fair to say that all of us need some type of release from tme to time, from daily stuggles, whatever it may be, as long as it doesnt affect ourselves or others negatively.
One of the symbols in "The Yellow Wallpaper" is the yellow wallpaper. The wallpaper represents the woman's mind set and how women were perceived during the time period. The tearing down of the wallpaper represents the woman trying to regain her sanity.
In "The Story of An Hour" the window symbolizes the freedom Louise has now. The blue skies symbolizes her new life and how it is getting better.
In "The Cask of Amontillado" eyes symbolize identity. The old man looks at him with evil eyes. He wants to separate the evil eyes from the old man but he cannot do that without killing the old man.
"The Cask of Amontillado" was full of literary elements. A few of the symbols that I picked up on were the temperature, the use of the color black, and even the abuse of alcohol. The temperature got colder symbolizing life slowing. The color black represents evil and death. Fortunado's alcohol addiction led to his downfall.
The "Story of an Hour" had a few symbols. I took notice of the heart issue, and I believe that symbolized that something big would happen. The clouds in the sky represented her life becoming more difficult.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" was a great piece of literature. The most obvious symbol was the yellow wallpaper itself which represented a woman's role in the time period that this book took place. This story however was a little more difficult to find symbolism in. I did find the barred windows seemed to support my beliefs about my first symbol found in the story.
In "The Story of an Hour" I believe one of the symbols would be the window. To me, it shows how since Brentley Mallard Died, Mrs. Mallard, who was afflicted with a heart condition could stop trying to survive, and was "free" to just let go. I think this is why she ends up having a heart attack, because she knows it will all be ok.
While reading "The Yellow Wallpaper" the first thing I noticed was the house itself. To me she described the house much as she described herself; Perfectly fine on the outside, but something a little worrisome about it. She then comes to the yellow wallpaper in the nursery room, which she says is ugly and that she just wishes to rip down. I think this reflects on her illness she has because she sees it as a problem, but her doctor sees nothing wrong with it.
To me the wallpaper represents how differently the view is on her disease depending on who you are. Also she states she just wants to rip it down, which I take as her wanting to rid herself of this illness to be better.
The symbols in "The Story of an Hour" were the open window, spring time, the patches of blue sky, and the comfortable chair. These all represent a new, fresh start in Mrs. Mallards life. I believe death was one of the only ways for someone to get out of an unhappy marriage at this time.
In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the obvious symbol is the yellow wallpaper. Yellow represents sickness. The torn wallpaper is maybe a sign of their torn marriage, and she feels like the woman hiding in the wall. The bars are a symbol of the narrator feeling trapped.
The Evil Eyes were a symbol in "The Cask of Amontillado". The eyes will be there as long as he is alive.
In "The Story of an Hour" I believe that the window symbolized freedom for Mrs. Mallard. I believe another symbol in this story would be her heart trouble. When the doctor said she had died of heart disease they called it a joy that kills. I believe she had joy because she finally got to be with her husband again.
In "The Yellow Wallpaper" I believe that the color yellow she is describing is a dull yellow with very little life. The lady in this story is depressed and the dull color of yellow on the walls of the room makes the room itself look depressing. The lady is depressed just as the dull color of yellow.
I believe the story "The Cask of Amontillado" also sybolizes depression. The evil and death in the story would be a big sign of depression in my opinion.
"The Cask of Amontillado" is by Edgar Allan Poe.One of the most major symbol is The underground catacombs it reprsents the sadness, dread, and the feeling of death that puncuates the story. THe evil eyes were also a symbol they mean always being watch.
"the Yellow Wallpaper" is a exceelent story that has the theme of isolation and deppression. One of the major symbols in the story is the house it could stand for isolation away from the rest of the world. the yellow wall paper can also mean disease.
In "The Story of the Hour" Symbolism is heavy in the story. The chair coluld mean being relaxed. the open window could mean being free the blue sky could mean mrs. mallards life is going to be easy and breezy.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" biggest symbols to me is the garden. The garden symbolizes a desired path or serenity. An other is the symbol is the yellow wallpaper. It represents her ability to not be able to decide.
Some of the symbols in "The Cask of Amontillado" were easy to spot. They were wine, nitrate, and coldness. The wine represents something that is desired. The nitrate represents caution. It being cold represents death or death is drawing near.
"The Story of an Hour" was very depressing. The symbols were; the word "free", religion, and heart problems. "Free" represents ready to be out of the body that causes her pain constantly. Religion symbolizes her having faith. Heart problems symbolizes that she is near death.
"The Cask of Amontillado," written by Edgar Allen Peo was full of depressing symbols. The most obvious one I noticed was the evil death. Also, it talked about the temperature getting colder which could symbolize life getting worse or slwoly going away.
"The Yellow Wallpaper," was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The wallpaper symbolizes how women were thought of during that time period. She does not like the wall paper because it is yellow and bright. She is in a depressed state and the yellow wallpaper sy,bolizes happiness.
"The Story of an Hour," by Kate Chopin is about a woman who loses her husband. The open window in the story could symbolize her freedom. Also, her heart disease stuck out to me as a symbol. She dies from "joy that kills" whcih could mean that she is happy that she is dying so she can be with her husband again.
The short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, was written by Charlotte Parkins Gilman. She was born in Connecticut and died in 1935. Depression is a major theme in this story. The lady suffers from postpartum depression. The nursery has yellow wallpaper of which she would love to tear down to rid of it. She seems to want to rid of the wallpaper like she wants to rid of her illness. She feels her illness robs her of her womanhood.
In “The Story of An Hour”, written by Kate Chopin, the window, spring, comfortable chair all represent a fresh start. A fresh start for Mrs. Mallard after Mr. Mallard’s death. I think in those days divorce was unheard of and she was living a depressing life with him. She could now breath and be free. She dies from a heart disease, it says in the story a joy that kills. To me this means she can now rest in peace, she can die with joy.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allen Poe, the evil eye and color black represent depression. The boy wants to get rid of the evil eye but can not without killing the old man, this makes him have depression.
All of these short stories have the theme depression in common. I believe we can all suffer from some type of depression in our lives. We all need to have a way to vent and take time for ourselves. We also need to try not to live with someone or something that makes us depressed.
"The Cask of Amontillado" had many symbols in the story. One of them was his smile that he gave Fortunato. This symbolized Fortunato's death because the writer knows what is about to happen to Fortunato. The crypt itself is a symbol. It shows death for many people. This might even show what could happen to a person from drinking.
In the short story "The Story of an Hour" there are many symbols as well. The armchair that she sits in shows freedom and well as peace and stability. She sits in this chair throughout the entire short story. Also, the new spring life mentioned in the story is a symbol of the new life that she has found. She says "freedom" many times showing her new found life.
For some reason I could not find "The Yellow Wallpaper" in my book. Therefor, I did not get to read it.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" was written by Charlotte Parkins Gilman. She was born in connecticut. In the story, the woman does not like the wallpaper. The wallpaper is a symbol of how woman were thought of and treated during that time period.
Edgar Allen Poe wrote "The Cask of Amontillado". Poe put several symbols in his story, including that of coldness. The cold represents nearing death.
"The Story of An Hour" was authored by Kate Chopin. The story is about a woman who becomes a widow, having lost her husband. The biggest symbol would have to be the window, representing her freedom.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The wallpaper symbolizes the woman's depression. She would like to get rid of the wallpaper, thus getting rid of her depression.
"The Story of an Hour" written by Kate Chopin. The story is about a lady dealing with the death of her husband. To her, his death is a bittersweet situation. She is sad about his death but, she now feels free and wishes to start fresh. The window symbolizes her freedom.
"The Cask of Amontillado" written by Edgar Allan Poe. One of the symbols was the temperature. It could mean that something bad is going to happen. Or that death is near.
In "The Cask Of Amontillado" a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe, there are many symbols enveloped within it. For example the Montresor name can be viewed as symobol of wealth because of the family's rich heritage, while the Fortunado name is ironic because as the story plays out, his destiny is far from being fortunate.
In "The Yellow Wallpaper", written by Charlotte Perkin, there are also many symbols that aid in the way the story will develop. In our society, the color yellow is often associated with happiness and things of good nature because it is a rather bright color. In this story however, the yellow wallpaper does quite the opposite and drive the protagonist crazy. Another symbol that can be found in this story is "Summer Home" that in the recent past was used as an insane asylum. As the story progresses, the woman in fact becomes insane herself and hallucinates about a woman being trapped within the wall. That woman, would be herself. When I first read the story, I figured that maybe the woman that she was seeing was a spirit or something since she was inside an insane asylum and places such as this are known to have lost spirits.
1. The story that I was most fascinated with was "The Yellow Wallpaper". Her husband, who is a well known physician, is treating her for depression and instead of helping her condition he winds up pushing her to insanity. Her husband's title, physician, is a symbol for all the mistrust that she feels for people in that profession. On page 337, she points out that her husband is a physician but it is only a dead paper and that is why she feels as if she isn't getting better. Her husband doesn't care to get to know her problem but says she is better. A real physician to her would take the time to diagnose the problem, hence a dead paper. The house, the room, the wallpaper, and the woman she supposedly sees are all symbols in this twisted story. I have read numerous reviews on what others believe the wallpaper symbols and one was the oppression that women feel in marriage. I did not perceive that. The wallpaper, to her, represents how people look upon her but don't take care of her, the tears symbolize this. Later on Gilman reveals that it is she who is the woman in the wallpaper. She is the one who has to hide at night. She is the one who feels like she is trapped, not behind the wallpaper but in life. She is screaming for help but no one seems to hear her cries. On page 348 she goes in to details and also leads you on to the ending reveal, take notice to line 205, " I have found out another funny thing but I shan't tell you this time!" I believe she has figured out that is her all along who needs to be freed because on page 351 line 262 she states, "I've got out at last, in spite of you and Jane. And I've pulled off most of the paper so you can't put me back!" She is freed the room and wallpaper was a symbol of her jail and her tearing down the wallpaper is her freedom.
"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is a story about freedom that can never be. Ultimately, Mrs. Mallard is released by death. Chopin uses her heart condition to reveal what will be her ultimate demise. The chair symbolizes her ground to reality. It is the only thing that is real. The window is what represents her dream. To be able to come and go like the birds. She feels held down by marriage. When she has finally gotten a hold of herself and assured that life will be pleasant she opens the door. The stairs are the peak to the story. Her walking down, in a way, symbolizes the end for her and the latchkey that opens the door represents the death of her dreams. Her husband is alive and her dreams are dead. It's ironic that the reader is led to believe her husband died but in the end it is her. As stated earlier, her heart condition foreshadows her death.
I was least inclined to read "The Cask of Amontillado". Poe disguises Montressor as the one who was injured when really it is Fortunato. He says that Fortunato did him a great injustice but never states what it is. The outfit that Fortunato is wearing is a symbol for what is to come. He plays the jester and ultimately the jest is on him when he is lured into the vaults to secure his fate. The mask that Montressor wears shows his cowardness. Again, he states what this Fortunato has done but doesn't give any evidence. The cough that Fortunato has, is a symbol for his exit. Montressor gives him numerous attempts to leave, almost as if he is unsure whether he wants to go through with the deed. The wine, Amontillado, is the final symbol. If it wasn't for him being so vain in his tasting ability he would have never been duped into coming to the vaults. Reply Add comment Load more...
This will hopefully be a place for me to blog about literature, authors I love, and books I have just read. It will also be a communicative tool for myself and my students.
I am currently an adjunct professor at three different colleges: Northwest Shoals Community College, Columbia State Community College, and Itawamba Community College. This means my life consists of all things English related 24 hours a day.

And I've pulled off most of the paper so you can't put me back!" She is freed the room and wallpaper was a symbol of her jail and her tearing down the wallpaper is her freedom.
ReplyDelete"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is a story about freedom that can never be.
