Why do you have to take pre-requisite courses such as comp II when this is not your major? What are the benefits? What are the downfalls? How do you think this class can help you prepare for your future?

  1. We have to take English, as a prerequisite, to show us how to write professional papers and deliver them in a correct format. Some of us will go on to work towards getting their masters or their doctorate and part of the requirements, for graduating, will be to write a dissertation paper. Many professors will already assume you know how to write the paper accordingly and will expect you to turn in your work following the MLA guidelines. Some professors might ask you to write an essay on two different subjects, asking that in your paper you use examples by inserting text used in the stories. If you did not know how to do this, or cite them correctly, it could turn a probable A into a D or maybe a failing grade.

Like many of us, I hate having to write the dreaded research paper. I can't see the point on researching a topic that has been researched so many times that it literally has 50 books on that one subject. I always ask myself if what we are actually researching is based on fact or is it the cumulative ideas of a scholar rephrasing what is already known and adding a little of their own opinions and calling it fact. The only advantage that comes out of this is I might learn a couple of interesting tidbits that I have yet to deem acquirable knowledge to know. Regardless, taking your basics will help you write a paper that if published would be knowledgeable and proper.

I believe this class will help me when I have to right a report on a case I do. It will give me enough practice that I can deliver a report that sounds professional and that is geared toward the knowledge of my coworkers. Without taking English, I do not believe a person could write a report properly.

  2. I believe that taking all general education courses will benefit a students overall comprehension, to be able to move forward into any field. As much as I prefer not to do it,I do understand the positive influence that taking the classes will have on my future. I have to keep in mind that learning is growing. As the saying goes, "learning is power." To be successful in life, we do need power. Communication is key to the hiring process, job skills, and inter-personal skills in any type of work environment.I am thankful that the classes are required for my degree.
There are so many positives about taking English courses in general. In the work force there is a high demand. One being, communication. To be able to communicate you have to have a defined vocabulary and know how to speak the correct way. I have notbeen in school for awhile, so this is a good reminder to freshen up my skills. First of all, step one, to be able to get hired for the job. There has to be some level of understanding of the english language to sound efficient enough to work in the field of your desire. When meeting with a possible manager or boss, personally I would prefer to be able to communicate well and have an understanding of the material given and the job requirements.
When taking the courses, the downfall may be that it is time consuming. Anything worth having is going to take hard work and dedication. It will not be easy, but as long as I strive to be the best that I can, then the rest will fall into place. This is an uphill battle, but there will be a victory. We are all here to accomplish our goal. Stay focused and take each course as a step closer to success.

  3. College in our modern era has become so accessible to everyone, of any race, economic status, and even to foreign nationalities, while in the past it was only reserved mainly for a very select group of people. Add on top of that there is a far larger population than there was one hundred years ago, or even ten years ago, the stakes are raised much higher. Obviously, just as in nature, the rate of competition will be higher, and far more severe. In this we find the need to be a "jack of all trades," and the need to sharpen ourselves to razor like edge to be able to take on the modern world and it's responsibilities.

While I would prefer not to have to take this class, I can definitely understand it's value, and it's purpose. Whatever job I may get, in fact, in a lot of jobs out there, it is essential to be able to analyze other people's writings, and in general, just to be able to think critically. Without that asset, we would become a nation of slaves within a generation, and so anything that can sharpen that skill, should be looked on with gratitude, for it is what will keep us free.

I believe that this course will help me, not only in my employment endeavors, but will also help in my personal life. Just to be able to watch a movie, or read a book, and see meanings past what meets the eye, in essence to see the true meaning of whatever I'm seeing. Wheather it's Luke Skywalker's journey in Star Wars, or the next President's lies, the skills learned in this course will be most important to my future, as well as everyones future.

  4. We would have to take this class to better our writing skills, research knowledge, analyzing skills, and grammatical skills.

The benefits may result in helping us find a job that we enjoy or maybe changing our minds in what we wanted to pursue in but changed our minds.

The downfalls would be us not taking Comp II. We would not know how to cite papers, on the information we found from another source. We would not have a clue on the word plagiarized if we did not and not knowing how to read a story and analyze it in our own words.

If one day in our future we would have to write a research paper or criticize someone else's paper we would know how to do it.

  5. Everyone, no matter what the major is, needs some type of English. Comp II will teach use how to understand what we are reading, whatever that might be. Knowing how to understanding what we read is a big factor that will play in our everyday lives.

Most employer will want their employee to be grammatical correct. Also, they will want the employee to be able to understand the meaning of what they have read.

If someone doesn't have the passion for knowing English, than that someone might have a struggle. I do not have this said passion. It was a long and difficult battle for me to finish Comp I.

With that being stated, the workforce will require us to know how to use English properly. That means knowing how to do more than just the basics of English. However, most of the professions do not use MLA format.

  6. By taking a pre-requisite like Comp II you learn underlining skills like analyzing the things you read. The same goes for most Pre-requisites. The school isn’t always trying to get more money out of people like most of us think it’s just some times. They are making us take these classes to make us better prepared for our careers. Because no matter what profession a person might get into they will have to read and understand everything that is handed to them.
Comp II also makes you read a variety of Literary Works to expose you to culture, history, and just plain entertainment. It’s like when you read Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn you learn what the south was like back then, not much has changed though. The Great Gatsby teaches you the culture of rich people back in the 1920’s, again not much has changed. Comp II will also expose to books and poems that you might really like and want to keep reading even after your done with the class or you hate with a passion.
Literary works are all around us in the world so we have to learn to understand them or we risk missing out on the valuable lessons the can teach us. Comp II also teaches really vital skills like making a blog. Comp II is not just a English class it teaches you skills you will never forget if you listen

  7. Albeit, most students will never be required to correctly include a works cited page in a research paper, determine the plot of a play, or theme of a short story by an employer. The basic skills needed to accomplish these tasks will prove advantageous throughout life.
For example, the company that you work for has recently hired a new general manager. She has sent you an e-mail outlining an idea that she thinks will improve production while reduciing cost and has requested your feedback. Your ability to understand the concept proposed and clearly communicate your response will be a reflection of your intelligence and value to the company. What would it say about you if your response contained mispelled words, obvious gramatical errors and did not pretain to the theme of the original email?
I do not see a downfall to English Comp. II being a required pre-requisite course. The skills taught to me in this class will stay with me throught the course of my professional life.

  8. Taking any pre-requisite courses may seem like they are pointless, but in all honesty there is a good reason behind them. Most pre-requisite courses are preparing you for things in life you may generally need.

I believe some of the benifits of taking these courses may be overlooked by most college students. The ability to write professional grade papers and review them for accuracy are just a few of the skills you will learn that will help you in your life. Other pre-requisite courses teach other valuable skills that you may not think will help you in your career, but they will help you somewhere in your life.

Honestly, there really isn't a downside to these courses. One day you may need to view a contract for anything out of the ordinary, or maybe write up a brief summary on an incident at work, Comp II would have taught you some of the writing skills needed.I personally believe all the skills you learn from pre-requisite courses either will help you in life or your career, maybe in ways you don't even know yet.

  9. By taking pre-requisite courses, you are establishing a firm foundation to prepare yourself to be successful in your major and ultimately in your career.

The benefits of taking English Comp. II are learning the skills for writing and the correct way of putting your ideas to paper. Acquiring these skills will benefit you in other classes and in the workforce.

One of the downfalls of taking English Comp. II is the cost on you financially. Also, if you are not strong in English or don't enjoy the requirements of English, you might struggle academically in the class.

English skills are very essential to every day life. These skills will prepare you to communicate professionally whether it be verbally or written.

  10. I do not believe that taking a class some as Comp II should even be an optional course yet rather required. There is nothing wrong with a class that teaches one how to write correct essays and how to thourougly write papers. A person who knows how to use correct grammar knows how to write will automatically entitle to a better position when applying for a job.

Me, Myself, I dont necessarilly enjoy writing papers becasue I know in my future career which is Law, writing well will be very benefical in everything I do.

  11. I feel like extra English classes should not be required for people who are not majoring in English. However, I do feel that it can be benificial. I believe that it can help us to learn how to write papers and to have a good usage of grammar.

I believe a downfall of this class is for people who have a hard time writing papers because it could strongly affect their grade. Some people have a harder time writing than other people do.

Even though English is not one of my strong subjects, I believe that it will help me in the long run. I am majoring in Education and I will probably have to write a paper at some point during my career and I am sure that I will be glad I took this class one day.

  12. I am excited that I am taking another English class. It is helping me with my research and my grammar. I am sure that in my major I will have to write paper and give reasoning of why certain things happened. Therefore, I would like to sound educated in these papers.

The downfalls of taking an extra English class are grade point average and taking to much time. If a student struggles with English then it is just going to hurt his or her grade point average. Therefore, the student should not have to take this class. Also, if a student does not have to take this class then the class would just take up time.

I am hoping that this class well prepares me for my future. I know that this class is not going to be a waste of my time. I am ready to get the research paper out of the way but I am glad to learn more. This class will help with interviews and how to keep my grammar correct. Therefore, I am glad to be in English Composition II this semester.

  13. As a student, at some point, we will ask "Why are we having to take a class that has nothing to do with our major"? This happens in elementary, high school and especially college when we can finally make decisions for ourselves. However, all of these classes can benefit us in some way for the rest of our lives.

I believe there are many benfits to taking Comp II. English is not one of my better subjects, but I sure wish it was. We use English every single day. With Comp II, It can better the way we speak, write and handle ourselves. English can give us the confidence we need for interviews, jobs, chatting with close family and friends, and also strangers.

I do not believe there are any downfalls to Comp II. Some people might think that it is a waste of time and that they can graduate more quickly without taking these extra classes. My opinion is that it can only better the person we are for our future.

  14. I believe everyone is required to take English classes for a few reasons. It helps everyone with grammar, spelling, and just keeps your brain working while reading and writing papers. I personally struggle a little in writing papers. It's been years since I had English composition one. So if you don't use it you loose it. As the saying states.

There are advantages in taking English compositin classes because you continue to learn new things and learn how to use new words that maybe you haven't used before. It can help you in future classes when having to write research papers.. It can also help you in a future job if asked to read or write a research paper or other documents.

The disadvantage are that if your aren't good in English and struggle it may bring your grade point average. You also may spend time on English more and your may end up not paying attention to your other classes and your grades may go down in those classes. If you aren't so good in English then try and take some easy classes while you take it. That's what I decided to do this semester.

  15. I haved asked myself the question is English a necessary course for my major. My major is in criminal justice. The more I ask myself this question, the more overwhelmed I become at how much impact English plays on my life. If I did not have English courses it would be difficult to read and comprehend.
English courses allow us to read, and it allows us to read more effectively. The literature aspect is much needed for any career path. Literature allows us to read and also respect the work of literature.
English also allows us to comprehend. English is all about analyzing, and with that being said we have a better understanding of our literature. We may be given an order, and we have to be able to comprehend and execute that to the best of our ability. That is why English plays such a large role, and that is why English is required!
