D.C. Trip

I cannot believe I have not written on this blog since September! This just goes to show how incredibly busy I have been with work for the last month....Wow! It is definitely time for a vacation. Just so happens, I am taking one this weekend. On Thursday, I leave for Washington, D.C., home of our nation's capitol and the Smithsonian museums. YAY! I cannot wait to get out of Alabama and Tennessee for a short while. I am soooo looking forward to some time away from teaching. My brain has been fried this semester by my work load. So, here is good bye for now and wishing all of you, and me, some much needed down time.

I leave you with today's literature fun fact-Part of Lewis Carroll's classic, "Through the Looking Glass," was omitted from the original publication and was only made known to the general public after 107 years of obscurity. The section, which featured a giant wasp wearing a wig, was left out because Carroll's illustrator, John Tenniel, refused to illustrate it. "A wasp in a wig," said Tenniel, "is altogether beyond the appliances of art."

Remembering 9/11 and the Return of Greatness

First of all, today is 9/11 so we should all be taking a moment of silence to remember those who fell during and after that great tragedy. To all who were affected and to our nation, you are forever in our prayers.

Second, the return of greatness has finally happened! Sons of Anarchy is back for its third season on FX. The season opener left me speechless. If you havn't witnessed this mob of men on motorcycles, the first two seasons are now on sale. If you hurry, you can get caught up before episode two on Tuesday night! Expect this blogger to spend many hours reliving each episode through this website....

Columbia State-Please remember that you all need to bring your comp I books so we can cover material missed last week.

Technology Haters

I recently have faced some new people on the job that seem to be what I like to call technology haters! Now, I do not hate technology, I simply am baffled by it sometimes. However, I try to learn and adapt where possible. So, for all those people out there hating technology and new ideas, I say, please! You are making my job much more stressful! Try and learn before you completely dismiss an idea. It is called being open-minded and it can take you far in life.....

Welcome Back

Hello fellow readers and bloggers. Sorry i havn't written lately. When I returned from the land of PhD work, I went straight into preparations for my new job. However, since Northwest Shoals starts back tom. night, I figured now was the perfect time to get reacquainted with my blog. So, here we are back for the Fall semester. Here's hoping everything goes well. Here's some new interesting info to get us off to a great start.

*Shakespeare used around 29,000 different words in his plays. About 10,000 of those words had never previously been used in any surviving English literature. Around 6,000 words only appear once.

The House of Poe

I recently visited Philadelphia, PA this past weekend and got to see the last remaining house lived in by Edgar Allan Poe....Needless to say, this was a dream come true. If you know me, then you know I adore Poe. This being said, imagine my delight as I walked in the house and into the rooms where Poe lived and breathed. I saw the study where he wrote "The Raven" and the bedroom where he slept. I also visited the cellar that he used as the model for the cellar in "The Black Cat." Of course Philadelphia holds many interesting sights being our first nation's capital, but for me, the delight was in Poe's museum. If you are ever in Philly, eat a cheesesteak and walk to halls of Poe's last remaining dwelling place.

Phd=Stressed Out!

This is the school where I have come to die lol!!! Just kidding, but I do feel my life being slowly sucked away. I would say I know what it feels like to be one of my students now, but I have never ever assigned this much work. I read, literally, 300-400 pages a day. That does not count the time I spend doing research for my final papers or working on my final papers. Ahhh! kill me now lol. I cannot wait to get back to the grind of the nine to five job. I never realized I had it so good. There is one glimmer of light here; the temperature never gets about 75! Ahh, I must say I do not miss the south in the summer hahahaha.

Greetings from Pennsylvania.....

Well....as most of you know I am embarking on a new chapter of my life. I like to call that chapter Stressed OUT All the Time! Seriously, I just moved into my new digs for the summer in PA amd my classes start tom. We had orientation yesterday evening, and I must say, it stressed me out even more. Hmmm who would have thought a doctorate degree would be so difficult....lol. Anyway, for those of you still reading this blog, keep me in your thoughts and prayers cuz I will need them. I will try and keep you posted on my daily disasters ha!

The End is Near.....

I am tearfully preparing for the end of one of the greatest shows ever written. Lost has become an iconic show filled with suspense, drama, and freakish monsters. This Sunday night at 6 p.m. (for those of you who live in caves) will be the ultimate finale! I am waiting impatiently to find out the answers to all of the greatest mysteries presented throughout the six seasons. I believe it will be the ultimate send-off. Needless to say, I have great faith in the writers of Lost. Hopefully, they will not let me down.

The New Robin Hood

I plan to go see this this weekend. I love the original with Kevin Costner, so I am anxious to see what they have done with this version! On a sidenote, if you are a BBC lover, they have an awesome Robin Hood series. I have just finished season one and it was wonderful. For the young at heart, I also recommend a young version of Robin Hood from the 90s. The movie is called Robin of Locksley.

Must Reads!

So, when Ms. Shelton told me that I needed to read the book The Hunger Games, I was like OK, I'll read it. And so I did. I wasn't thinking I would like it because it is a book for young adults. I was soooooo wrong. This is the best young adult novel I have read since Twilight! It is adventure, drama, and post apocalyptic world all rolled into one. If you like reading about a future world filled with controlling forces and a protagonist that is far from perfect, then this is the novel for you! You will be enthralled from beginning to end. I know I was. It took two days to read the first one, and thank goodness there is a sequel called Catching Fire. It was a three day read, only because I was grading papers lol!
Now the best news yet! They are making Hunger Games into a movie.....The rights have been purchased by Lionsgate and the cast is supposedly being put together as I write this. They are planning a 2011 release date. I guess I can wait that long, but only because the third book in the trilogy comes out in August of this year! Thank Goodness, because the second book totally leaves the reader in a cliffhanger. AHH!

Mark Twain Comes to Flo Town!

FLORENCE, Ala. – Fans of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer can see their creator, Mark Twain, at the University of North Alabama for a one-night show later this month. UNA alumnus Will Stutts, one of the nation’s premier one-person show actors, will perform “Mark Twain’s America” at 7 p.m. April 23 in Norton Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

“Mark Twain’s America” is being presented by the UNA Distinguished Events Series and the public libraries of the Shoals as part of The Big Read. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. This project has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Stutts’s “Mark Twain’s America” is the show that started his career in theatre in 1968, when, as a student at UNA, he was asked to perform the character in an American literature class. Within two years, Stutts had extended the material and performed the show numerous times for college, high school and community groups throughout the Southeast.

After graduating from UNA, Stutts left his native Alabama, attended the prestigious Yale University School of Drama, then went on to live in New York and Los Angeles, beginning an eclectic career in theatre throughout the country.

And yet, his Mark Twain has remained a regular touring vehicle in his roster of one-person plays for 42 consecutive years, amassing more than 1,000 single engagements in 40 states and Canada. The historic steamboat the Delta Queen, the New Orleans World’s Fair and the national television commercial for Olivetti typewriters are just a few of the stages where he has performed as Twain.

Several years ago, attendance counting for “Mark Twain’s America” ceased when the count crossed 1 million who had seen the show.

Stutts has performed in scores of roles in addition to directing at most of America’s regional theatres. He has also performed on Broadway with Colleen Dewhurst in “Queen and the Rebels,” George C. Scott in “Present Laughter,” Agnes Moorehead and Will Geer in “Spoon River Anthology,” Richard Chamberlain in “Night of the Iguana” and “Richard II,” and Eva Marie Saint in “Summer and Smoke.”

An Alabama native, Stutts performed the role of Atticus in the stage version of “To Kill a Mockingbird” on national tour in addition to 12 other productions of the play across the country.

As producing artistic director, he has led the Los Angeles Shakespeare Company, Actors’ Theatre of Philadelphia, South Jersey Regional Theatre and the Gateway and Mt. Gretna playhouses. He is currently serving in the same capacity at UNA for the university’s Summer Theatre Program.

As a playwright, Stutts has written 16 one-person plays, including “Frank Lloyd Wright,” which was nominated for the Barrymore Award for Best New Play of 1996.

His multi-character plays include “The Gift” (about Harper Lee and Truman Capote and the origins of “To Kill a Mockingbird”) and “Oscar Wilde’s Lover,” which was selected for inclusion in “Best Plays” in 1999.

Stutts lives in suburban Philadelphia.
This is a great opportunity to support the arts of the area. Look forward to going!

Shoals Comp II-Remember we are meeting in front of Norton Auditorium at 6:45 pm. See you guys there.
Comp I-Please make sure you have your group presentations ready for Tuesday night. Each person will receive credit for their participation and presentation.

Columbia!

Comp I--Please remember that your research papers are due tom. at the beginning of class. You will need all of your information in a Manila folder. You must submit your paper to turnitin.com before you turn in the paper. If you do not submit it, I will not grade it (loving the rhyme).

Comp II-For both classes (2pm and 3:30 pm). We will meet at the Hickman building at ten til two. The presentation will be in room 122 for those of you who come late. If you want your extra credit, please make sure you let me know you are there!

Fun Fact:
John Milton composed the greatest epic in the English language Paradise Lost after he was blind (between 1658 and 1664). He claimed that he received nightly divine inspiration, and during the day he composed his epic. Paradise Lost is packed with biblical and mythological allusions—attesting to Milton’s vast knowledge and incredible memory.

Reminder of Greatness

It is with great excitement that I am reminded of the greatness of television.
Sometimes a show comes along that makes you very very happy.
For me, that show since the beginning has been Supernatural. It is a horror film, detective show, and family drama all rolled into one. If you have not watched it, please tune in. I am happy to report that the show has been picked up for a season 6! This is wonderful news, since from the beginning the show was only intended to have five seasons. I was speaking with Ramona (Mrs. Shelton) the other day and discussing the fact that I often introduce others to great books and television. Since I have discussed books previously, I will now fill you all in on the best television had to offer.
1. Supernatural
2. Glee
3. Lost
4. Sons of Anarchy
5. The Vampire Diaries
6. Fringe
7. House
8. Smallville
9. The Tudors
10. Dexter
And for shows that are no longer on but that everyone should watch:
Jericho
Veronica Mars
Moonlight
Being Human
SEINFELD!!!
October Road

Tax Day--UGH!

Albert Einstein
[on filing for tax returns] This is too difficult for a mathematician. It takes a philosopher.

Amen Brother! Of course, not only do we all have to pay taxes, but the stupid forms that must be filled out require us to pay more to hire an accountant each year. If you get a refund, the process becomes a bit more bearable, but if not, the entire process just sucks. Here's hoping each of you at least get something back from dear Ole' Uncle Sam...

Comp I-essays due at the end of the night tonight. We will be meeting in the lab.
Comp II-Come prepared to talk about poetry. Tonight we leave our subject of death and enter something a bit more scandalous!

Books and Business

So, being a huge Ole Miss fan, when the movie The Blind Side came out, I had to go see what all the hype was about. If you havn't seen it, put it on your list. The movie is great. Even Sandra Bullock's southern twang becomes enduring after twenty minutes or so. However, I heard the book was much different from the story they tell in the movie. So....you know me. I just love an investigation. I bought the book, and I am now almost finished with it. In case you live on another plantet, the book is the true story of Michael Oher, an African-American kid from the streets (literally) of Memphis, TN. He has no home, he is considered ignorant by the school and his teachers, and at first, he has no idea what to make of the game of football. He ended up being adopted by a rich white family from the suburbs of Memphis. He played football at Ole Miss and was a first round draft pick to the NFL. The story is one football lovers everywhere must check out. While the novel gives more insight into Michael's life, I do not believe the story was changed in the movie enough to matter. It is still a great story. A must read!

Shoals-Comp II-Poetry tonight. Be ready for in class discussions. Comp I-We begin your last paper. Also, please finish reading Brave New World. Just two weeks until the final. Yes, I put it in bold just like you guys requested.

Columbia-Comp I-work on your research papers!
Comp II-Hopefully you guys are bringing me snacks for Avatar.

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Comp II-Remember, we go to the lab tom. for our one and only day to discuss the final 2,000 word research paper.

Fun Fact Day

Epitaph
At age 22, while working as a printer, Benjamin Franklin wrote the following epitaph for his grave:

“The body of Benjamin Franklin, Printer (like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out and stripped of its lettering and gilding), lies here, food for worms; but the work shall not be lost, for it will (as he believed) appear once more in a new and more elegant edition, revised and corrected by the Author. He was born Jan. 6. 1706. Died 17—.”

Many years later, he changed his mind. Today the following inscription is on his grave: “Benjamin and Deborah Franklin: 1790.”

What's up with that Ben? The first epitaph was soooo much better. Anyway, for those of you keeping up with my reading selection, as of now I am finishing Nefertari by Michelle Moran. While her first book Nefertiti was good, this one I find to be wonderful. Check it out if you havn't already.

Shoals-For Tom. Comp one-your research papers are due at the end of class.
Comp II-Read poetry selections as we head into a new section.

Back in Town!

Well....after an amazing trip, I am now back and I must say it is good to be home. I love to see the sights, but nothing is better than quiet time in my own home. If you know me, then you know I adore traveling. I will go anywhere, anytime. No excuse is to small to see how others live and experience their culture. New York was no different. The culture in the city is endless and the sights are amazing. I highly recommend it to those who have the opportunity. However, I will say, avoid the Empire State building at all costs! Four hour waits are crazy! Next on my U.S. list is Boston or Washington, D.C. Anyway, for now it is back to work! We are winding down to the end of the semester. Please check the previous blog to be ready for class on tues or wed. See you there.

Fun Site for Cell Phones

OK for all you nerds out there...or for those of you who just love a good pick me up...here is the new site for you and your cell phone. You can make it an app or make it a favorite. It is called cellstories.net and everyday it provides short stories (about 5 minutes to read) on your cell phone. This is great if you'd love to discover new writers out there or if you just need something to entertain you during lecture (yes, we -the teachers-know that you are secretly checking your phones)! Anyway, I love it and thought you might too..

Columbia Students-Comp I. please bring notes to discuss Maisie Dobbs in class. Also, bring any questions you may have about the novel. We will discuss possible test questions.Remember, the test will be Wed. April 7th. Comp II-Bring textbooks. We will be reading passages and discussing the Rogerian Argument paper that will be due on Wed. See you tom!

Northwest Shoals--Comp I-you are to be doing outside research for your research papers. We will be going to the lab Tuesday to work on these essays. Comp II-You are writing your drama essay outside of class this time. Also, be ready to begin poetry when we return Tuesday!

New Week!

Fun Fact of the day--Most of my students in Alabama know this because we study Plath, but Sylvia Plath, who did not reach her 31st birthday, gained status as a 20th century author. She is considered one of the greatest short story writers and poets. However, today she is most famous for her depression and suicide attempts. Sylvia tried multiple time to commit suicide, her first being in college when she swallowed sleeping pills under her house. Later she married Ted Hughes, an English poet, who was often unfaithful. After their separation, Sylvia finally succeeded in her suicide. She went into the kitchen, shut the door, and sealed any cracks with towels. She then turned on her gas oven and stuck her head deep inside. Authors so many times find odd ways to end their lives. I find it fascinating. Oh well, maybe I am just morbid. however, Plath was a visionary for women's lit. If you have never read her poem, mirror, check it out. It is amazing!

Columbia--
It is a new week. For Comp I, we will be watching a video tom. but please remember, you guys need to be there because you will be quizzed on the movie! Comp II--both classes need to be ready for their debates in class. Hope the presentations go better than the group work did.....

Alabama-I will post notes for you guys tom.

Friday!!!

O.K. So my latest revelation is that planning a 50th wedding anniversary is a lot of work! My grandparents are celebrating theirs in May and I am in charge of party planning. Not only do my grandparents have no idea of the addresses of their friends, but they also want me to locate them....AHHH! Anyway, I want everything to turn out perfect, so of course I am stressing. Oh well, here's to my new future plans...search and locate....

Freaky.....

Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story in 1838, "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", in which three shipwreck survivors in an open boat kill and eat the fourth, a man named Richard Parker. In 1884, in the real world, three shipwreck survivors in an open boat killed and ate the fourth, whose name was Richard Parker.
Man, I Love POE!!!

PS I know many of you could care less what I am reading, but others may want to know what I think totally rocks. Anyway, right now, I am going through a Steven King phase. That being said, here is what you should definitely pick up. Under the Dome, which is one of the best books I have ever read and From A Buick 8, which I am currently listening to in the car. The latter is heavily alienesk..if that is a word lol. however, the story telling of both will blow you away. I have never read wit to match King's. I am also currently reading a book on books and literature by Michael Dirda and finishing Nefertiti by Michelle Moran.

Fun Fact of the Day!

In case you are interested----

Christopher Marlowe

Assassination or Murder?
The story behind Marlowe’s death at age 29 is controversial. According to traditional history, Marlowe died in a brawl at a local tavern, stabbed to death by another man. However, the fact that Marlowe was somewhat involved with some mysterious issue with Queen Elizabeth makes the reason for his death to be a possible political assassination. Therefore, his temper revealed in his last brawl that caused his death might be just a cover up of an unknown bigger reason for his death. For more information on this topic, check out The World of Christopher Marlowe, by the scholar David Riggs. .

Where Would Shakespeare Be without Marlowe?
Marlowe, a Shakespeare contemporary, rose to fame in his twenties, before Shakespeare had accomplished any notable work. Marlowe was a pioneer in composing blank verse (unrhymed poetry) and using iambic pentameter for his two famous plays (Tamberlaine and Dr. Faustus). Shakespeare, who rose to fame soon after Marlowe, copied Marlowe’s style in all of his thirty-seven plays. .

Fun Fact #3

Cinderella's slippers were originally made out of fur. The story was changed in the 1600s by a translator. It was the left shoe that Aschenputtel (Cinderella) lost at the stairway, when the prince tried to follow her.

Interesting....

Hopefully, by the time you all read this I will have given the address to all my classes. Please remember to check this blog before class each day for updates and reminders. Maybe this will help keep us all on track.

Fun Fact #2

Here is today's literature fun fact. I thought it was hilarious because 1. Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors and 2. This sounds exactly like something I would do and, of course, someone would later find out about it and put it on the internet hundreds of years later!

Jealousy
July 1814, when Sir Walter Scott’s first novel Waverly was published, Jane Austen was a bit jealous. She wrote the following in a letter to her niece:.

“Walter Scott has no business to write novels, especially good ones.—It is not fair.—He has fame and profit enough as a poet, and should not be taking the bread out of other people’s mouths.—I do not like him, and do not mean to like Waverly if I can help it—but fear I must.” .

Ironically, today Jane Austen is a much more popular author than her contemporary Sir Walter Scott..

Ahh Jane, How alike we are. Anyway, school is back in session for me tom. after being gone for four days to Chicago! Here's looking to a full day on the job.

Fun fact of the day

Here is today's literature fun fact.

The first novel ever written is believed to be The Tale of Genji, written in the first decade of the 11th century by Murasaki Shibuku, a Japanese noblewoman. It contains 54 chapters
