NW Shoals-Poetry
Write about the theme of war in the poems you are reading for November 26th. How is the theme of war or death or the idea of the soldier present in each poem?
The Man He Killed theme is war. The war is present in each poem because the enemies are face to face, seeing each other before, but only if they would had meet some place else it would not had happen this way.
Dulce et decorum est theme is death. The death is present because he his honored and proud to die for his country with the long years of suffereing from what he seen and what had happened.
The Unknown Citizen them is idea. This is present because he will always be remembered. He was a well-known man who fought for his country for many years.
Anthem for Doomed Youth theme is war. The men and young men are gettin called to come fight.
The Death of a Soldier theme is death. The soldier will always be remembered but later forgotten.
The theme of death and war is prevalent in each poem.
"Dulce et decorum est" translates to, "It is Sweet to Die For One's Country". This poem written is by Wilfred Owen. It is filled with irony and symbolisim. The poem's title phrase is followed by the words "the old lie". This incongruous statement captures the dry sarcastic tone of the entire poem. The soldier drowning under a green sea symbolizes the soldier suffocating from gas and eventually actually drowning as his lungs filled with his own blood. The poem also points at the waste of human life during war.
"The Man He Killed" by Thomas Hardy also suggests the senseless deaths that are a result of war. Two men meet and one must die only because of the side they have choosen to fight for. The irony is that had they met under any other circumstances, they're meeting likely would not have ended so tragically.
"The Unknow Citizen" by W.H. Auden also contains a slightly sarcastic undertone within the poem. It is an obituary written for an unknown soldier. Althought the peom is delivered very straightforward, the final two lines reveal the author's true ironic intentions.
"Anthem for A Doomed Youth" by Wilred Owen also points to the wasted loss of life during war. Bells and candles are a mockery to the soldiers because they cannot save them. They are symbols that make those left behind feel reassured that their loved ones will be safe.
"The Death of A Soldier" by Wallace Stevens suggests that the author is conveying an attitude that is more patriotc than the previous poems. Life and death are a natural part of the life cycle and the soldier would not require a fuss over his death because it is his duty to die for his country. This poem is a bow to all of the soldiers that have died honorably for our freedom that we will never be the wiser of.
The person who wrote "The Man He Killed"is Thomas Hardy. The theme is death, because besides the people physically and emotionally at war, there seems to be talk about war. also suggests the senseless deaths that are a result of war.
"The Death of A Soldier" was written by Wallace Stevens. Like most things humans live and die. On the other hand, soldiers have a duty to protect our country with their own lives. The theme is war.
"Dulce et decorum est" was written by Wilfred Owen. The theme is death. The clever word play that the author uses tells the readers that death plays a bigger part in life.
"Anthem for a Doomed Youth" was a viscous tale. Men and women had to sacrifice their lives for battle. The theme is war and death.
"The Unknown Citizen" was written by W.H. Auden. The theme in this poem was all three; death, war and idea. The tone of the poem makes the reader realize that things may be gloomy.
The poem "Dulce et decorum est" is titled after a popular poem written by Horace, an ancient Roman poet. The reason I believe this particular line is used as the title is for an ironic purpose, in that "Dulce et decorum" was a popular line to be used during WWI (obviously what this poem by Wilfred Owen is about). "Bitter sweet it is to die for one's fatherland." However the youths of Germany, Britain, Russia, America, Austro-Hungry, etc. found out it is not "bitter sweet," it is loud, dirty, miserable, agonizing, and messy.
"The Death of a Soldier" by Wallace Stevens, I believe is merely trying to portray a soldiers death without emotion, that it is just the natural order of things.
"The Man He Killed" by Thomas Hardy, is trying to convey that in different times or in different circumstances the enemy that he killed, could have been his friend, but because of their orders and duty, they had to face each other on the field of battle.
"The Unknown Citizen" by W.H. Auden was a really hard one for me to try and interpret but it seemed to me like it was written about a soldier who had either killed someone, or killed themselves, or something had gone terribly wrong enough to where someone, a police man, journalist, etc, was trying to figure out the causes behind their irrational behavior. The last lines, "And his Health-card shows he was once in hospital but left it cured." and "Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard" really makes me believe this. He had paid his Union dues, had insurance, had installments, blah blah blah, everything seemed fine, but the one thing they over looked was he had went to war, and that alone can destroy a man.
"Anthem for a Doomed Youth" by Wilfred Owen outlines how surreal the music and pomp of the parades can seem once one actually gets to the front line and sees no choirs their to greet him, no fancy uniforms, only mud, blood, and death.
All of these poems have the theme of war and of the soldier.
"The Death of a Soldier"- In this poem I think that the writer is showing that when a soldier dies, on the battlefield, it honestly is an emotionless time.
"The Man He Killed"- I believe it shows here that normally the man on the other end of your rifle may just be an average man that you would enjoy a drink with, if they didn't call you enemies.
"The Unknown Citizen"- I think this shows that the only time someone can be different is in war, that doing your duty in everyday life is the same as doing your duty in war time.
"Anthem for a Doomed Youth"- I think this is war through a child's eyes, all the noises are described and the sites you would see are described as if the narrator didn't understand what was going on.
"Dulce et decorum est"- This poem shows the true graphic nature of war. This part of war is what people try to hide, because it is truly disturbing the kinds of ways that people you know can die, fighting for a cause.
"Dulse et decorum est" was written by Wilfred Owen. This poem was written during the war. It is about the death that is lying all around and the hardships that these people had to face. This was a hard time period.
"The Man he Killed" was written by Thomas Hardy. This poem is about the death of someones enemy. The man was killed only because he was on the opposing side.
"The Unknown Citizen" was written by W.H. Auden. This poem is about your average man that is willing to do a little of everything. He seemed to be content with his life and serve his duties when it was his time.
"Anthem for a Doomed Death" was written by Wilfred Owen. This poem explains how awful it is to go to war. It also explains how the war is full of death and how the soldiers aren't said to be any more important than cattle.
"The Death of a Soldier" was written by Wallace Stevens. This poem explains that the war is calling for death. War is a sad way to lose your life, and for it to still not mean anymore to people that in does.
"Dulce et Decorum Est" was written by Wilfred Owen. In this poem the author describes the other side of a soldier at war. Not just a fresh recruit nut one that has been through the trenches. The soldier displayed here shows the effects of being AT war.
"The Man He Killed" was written by Thomas Hardy. The author displays in this poem the soldier that kills. Not only is the soldier fighting for their country but the author describes that both soldiers on both sides are just fighting, and that is not anything personal towards that individual.
"The Unknown Citizen" was written by W. H. Auden. The unknown here stands for a group of citizens not necessarily a soldier. The author does allow this to be open ended but the reader does know that this is similar to the tombs of the soldiers whose lives were taken. This is death and war portrayed here in this poem.
"Anthem for Doomed Youth" was written by Wilfred Owen. The sound imagery here displays the author is definetly against the war. The drawing down of blinds is when the soldier has died and to me it indicates where his eyes are the blinds that have shut forever.
"The Death of a Soldier" was written by Wallace Stevens. The season here indicated death, but to me, autumn would mean new beginnings. The author shows his view on war as being we are going to die anyway, and basically life goes on. The soldier knew what he was signing up for.
"Anthem for Doomed Youth" was written by Wilfred Owen. He used sound imagery in this poem. Wilfred Owen also wrote the poem, "Dulce et Decorum Est." The author was against the idea of war. Both poems are about the problems that war can cause and the death of soldiers.
"The Death of a Soldier" was written by Wallace Stevens. He views a soldiers death as something that is going to happen anyway. The author believes all soldiers are expected to die.
"The Unknown Citizen" was written by W.H Auden. The poem is not about one single soldier but a group of citizens. The poem has the them of death.
"The Man He Killed" was written by Thomas Hardy. The poem is about one soldier killing another. They do not have personal issues with each other. The fact they were told who was the real enemy is why one kills the other. Had they met before the war they could have been good friends.
"Dulce et decorum est" is written by Wilfred Owen. The title for this poem, in my opinion, is derived from the military's usage of Latin phrases for unit phrases. Owen gives an in depth look at some of the very tactics that the military utilizes during warfare. Chemical warfare is mentioned specifically, and as they call out the military command "GAS, GAS" someone fails to complete the mission. This failure leaves the reader stunned at the realization of soldiers losing their lives.
"The Death of a Soldier" is written by Wallace Stevens. This poem portrays a little more apathetic view. This poem shows the reasoning and the risks involved with military life. It shows that soldiers are not looking for "pomp." Soldiers are noble and valiant.
"The Unknown Citizen" is written by W.H Auden. This poem indirectly refers to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but instead it places an average blue collar worker in this position. This poem served to me as a wake-up call stating that it can happen to us all.
"Anthem for Doomed Youth" is also written by Wilfred Owen. This story displays a sad and remorseful connection between soldiers and cattle. More specifically, the slaughter of the soldier and cattle. This poem provides us with a great example of sound imagery.
"The Man He Killed" is the final poem written by Thomas Hardy. This story displays the fact that soldiers are not evil, they only kill so that they may survive. This poem shows that soldiers hold nothing personal against each other, it even goes so far to imagine the experiences they may have shared if this violent exchange had not occurred.
In "Dulce Et Decorum Est" and "Anthem for Doomed Youth" Wilfred Owen takes a anti-war stance against encouraging our youth to sign up for the military. Owen wants to portray war as it really is, ugly. In "Dulce Et Decorum Est", Owen uses words of fatigue, restlessness, and death to portray the life of our soldiers and, in "Anthem for Doomed Youth", Owen pretty much states that there will be no glory in death on the battlefield. A soldier's death is not welcomed by the sounds of the sweet church bells but rather the sounds of gun fire ringing in their ears.
"The Man he Killed" by Thomas Hardy, the reader has a sense of sympathy for both countries in war. Hardy brings to light the split moment of truth that a soldier must face before he fires his weapon. The fact that he/she knows nothing about their enemy, for all he/she knows, they could be excellent friends with this person if given the opportunity but because they were told this person opposite them is their enemy they must shoot them down and, so they do.
"The Unknown Citizen" by W.H. Auden, to me, represents the life of our military men. Standing beside us, in normal everyday attire, carrying on their own lives and acting as though they have seen nothing, to us they appear normal but what may appear as normal on the outside could really be a facade to hide the torment on the inside. Who's to say they really know someone? Auden makes the reference, on page 788 line 31 of "Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard" as a joke. No one knows what is going on in another person's life until they walk a mile in their shoes. What's apparent to me is the simple fact that this "citizen" carries on a life of the average American when in reality this man is nothing short of extraordinary.
"The Death of a Soldier" by Wallace Stevens is written to oppose the statements that Owen takes on war. Here, Stevens states that a soldier understands that by joining our military there is a possibility that he/she may not come back home alive. There will be no glory on the field, the only glory is knowing that in death one served their country. Like the seasons, death is a part of war, a person can not stop it from happening; instead, they must embrace it and move on. Such is the life of a soldier.
"The Man He Killed" focuses on the senselessness and futility of war, where a man has killed another quite simply because they were fighting on opposing sides in a war.
"The Death of a Soldier" offers am example of the early powers, not at all those of a detached observer of violence, but rather of one engaged totally with a world in which violence, like change, is the given.
"The Unknown Citizen" is unknown because his name has become unimportant. He lived, he followed the conventional beliefs of his time, he functioned in a factory. He was never fired, worked satisfactorily, and he paid his union dues. He was popular with his co-workers and would join them occasionally for an after-work drink. He subscribed to a daily paper, responded to advertisements as the advertisers would expect him to respond, was fully insured, was hospitalized once and was pronounced cured. He needs no other name than Modern Man.
"Dulce et Decorum Est" the words of this Latin saying were widely understood and often quoted at the start of the First World War. They mean "It is sweet and right." The full saying ends the poem: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is a wonderful and great honour to fight and die for your country.
In each of these poems war is a major theme. They are all very depressing as well. "The Man He Killed" shows that war pit people against each other whom have no quaral.
"The Uknown Citizen" shows that everyone could be the person that goes to war. It also shows how everyone could be normal. However, as the poem describes, who is normal?
"The Death of a Soldier" shows that war takes the lives of soldiers no matter what. Soldiers know the price of what they sign up for. The people around them know the price as well.
"Dulce et Decorum Est" was the most depressing depiction of war. It shows how peoples lives are taken at an instant. Whether the person is ready or not, war will strike at any time.
This will hopefully be a place for me to blog about literature, authors I love, and books I have just read. It will also be a communicative tool for myself and my students.
