Columbia State-Ender's Game
Write about your favorite character from the novel. What do you like or dislike about this character? How does he/she change the plot or the story? How does your chosen character develop or change in the novel?
Ender is definately my favorite character in this novel. He wants to win victories in order to win peace, but when he employs severe violence, he is unsure whether he has been motivated by necessity or a more violent part of his character.
In order to prevent harassment or even his own death later on, Ender defends himself against his enemies Stilson and Bonzo Madrid to such a degree that he kills them both. At the same time, he is motivated by fairness and compassion, evidenced by his conversations with superiors and subordinates as well as by his feelings and actions after killing the buggers.
Ender has changed in many ways throughout the novel he lacked inspiration at the end. In the beginning things were not so great be he had dreams of them being better. All he had to do was show everyone how good and talented he was and life would be better. Now at the end he has proven to be the best. There is no going back and going forward there was nothing to inspire him. He had wiped out an entire species and had their deaths haunt him. He would carry that guilt with him forever and if it weren't for Valentine showing that she loves him after all he had done, he might not believe in love or goodness anymore.
My favorite character in the novel is Alai. I like Alai because he is a friend to Ender when Ender needs one the most. At the beginning of the novel, Ender is on the outside of his launchie group and in the dark. Alai is like a light for him. I also like that Alai stayed true to his religion even when it was forbidden.
Alai really changes the plot at the beginning of the story. Alai, using his popularity among the other launchies, helps the unpopular Ender lead them. Without Ali, Ender would never have taken command of his original launchie group. This was a critical point for Ender in the process of moving up the ranks.
Due to the fact that Alai is not a main character in the novel, his character development is not seen. He does change in the novel from a launchie to a commander in Ender’s “virtual” army. Alai’s talents were developed. Alai is not a major character, but he is my favorite nevertheless.
my favorite character is ender because he is extremely smart and he does not let anyone influence him in a negitive way. he has the qualities of both valentine and peater but he trys his best to not become the monster that peater is. he is able to stand up for himself. he hates violence but is trying to keep the peace for him and the others surrounding him.
Bean is my favorite character. In many ways his character is extremely similar to Ender’s. However, as Bean’s character develops, he has a stronger personality than Ender’s. Because Ender was “manipulated” when he first arrived at training school, he also “manipulates” Bean with the others in his platoon. Bean takes notice and puts up a resistance against it.
Bean knows what he wants and is willing to stand up for himself. Though Bean has many good aspects to his character, he also has some flaws, like every other character. He is proud and, at first, not willing to openly take advice or instruction. He is overtly more proud than Ender was at the beginning of the story.
Bean is almost “specially” trained by Ender in that Ender pushes Bean harder than many of the other boys. At the end of the story, Bean is one of the few chosen to fight in the final battles. He also has a large impact of the shaping of Ender’s character by the end of the story. Bean develops into a more mature character as the story develops.
My favorite character in the book is Valentine. Valentine is my favorite character because not only is she Ender's sister, but also his best friend and the only one he can trust. One thing that I like about Valentine is how she stands up to Peter and never lets Ender down. Even after not hearing from Ender through letters when he is in battle school, she is still there for him when he returns to Earth.
Valentine changes in the story by simply maturing and growing up. She changes the plot of the story by making Ender return to battle school. Without Valentine telling Ender to go back, he would have stayed on Earth and the buggers could have taken over the world. Valentine also changed the plot by leaving Earth with Ender in the end. If Valentine would have stayed on Earth, Peter would have controlled her life.
My favorite character is Ender. The way Orson Scott Card develops Ender as the main character intrigued me the most. I was fascinated with the complex emotions Ender demonstrated at such a young age. We were able to see Ender analyze and decipher actions by those around him at such a rate most adults could not imagine. We quickly came to see how special Ender is and even how much he stands out within his own family of geniuses. Ender was a combination of Peter and Valentine yet he never wanted to fully acknowledge just how fierce and determined he could be. He always wanted to be his own person and he very much wanted to show compassion before anger or aggressiveness. As Ender matured in the book and developed leadership skills at such an alarming rate, he realized how others around him were pushing him to reach his full potential. Even at battle school he began to question the motives of the teachers and knew exactly what the expectation of him was. Ender changes in character when his confrontations with other characters accumulate. In his fights, he begins to see this side of him that requires total defeat of his enemy. This has such an impact on the story because this is exactly what the teachers are looking for in a commander.
I do not usually pick favorites when it comes to characters, so I will choose Valentine to talk about. I admire Val for not forgetting Ender while he is gone to battle school and also for being his emotional anchor. I dislike that she manipulated throughout the book.
Valentine gives Ender much needed encouragement when he gives up or loses his drive. Without her, Ender would not have succeeded at battleschool or commandschool. Val while under a proxy and also while being manipulated by Peter, changes the political situation on earth so that Peter come to power.
Valentine matures in age as well as ability. She develops her writing through her Demosthenes pseudonym. She also realizes that she likes control just as much as Peter.
The Ender's Game is the best book I have read for a class. All the other books I have read for other classes were so boring and unrelatable. My favorite character in the book is Val. She is so precious, but she has another side that she keeps hidden. She made the book because if it wasn't for her Ender would have never gotten to the point that he was in the book. He never would have saved the world even though he did not know it. Val is the peice of the puzzle that keeps the whole She should have tols Peter because she hung out with him so much but never told him how she really felt. She is very smart, and she keeps most things a secret. She reminds me of myself because I am quiet and full of love for everyone specifically my family.
My favorite character in the book is Ender. I feel like I can really undersand his frustrations and anger as the bok progresses. I hate it for him that he was forced into going to this school where the other children bullied him and he had to pretend that it didn't bother him. It also makes me feel for him in the fact that he doesn't want to be a killer or a murderer, but he's being forced to. He just wants to understand the enemy, not harm them.
With the ending of the novel playing out as Ender fighting real Buggers, I think I could understand Ender's reactions. I think it would be hard to think that all you were doing was playing a game and then find out it was real, especially considering Ender's inward battle with murder. When he realized he had killed all the innocent Buggers, he became utterly depressed. I think anyone in that position would act the same way.
I'm very impressed that after everything Ender went through, he still didn't give up. He went out and continued to learn about the Buggers. I think part of the reason he did continue was the fact that he began to learn about all the ways that the Buggers had tried to communicate with him. I think it helped him get over his anger from killing off the species and move forward and try to find a way to revitalize the species.
My favorite character in the book is Ender. It is not a surprise that he is my favorite character because he practically is the story. Ender reminded me a lot of myself in the way that he delt with his problems. He was an easy going, great person that at times had to do what was necessary even thoughhe did not want to. He did not want to end like his older brother which I also can relate to. I think if it was not for Ender, and his contstant worry of becoming his brother, then the booger population would have been destroyed. Ender has heart, and that is something that never leaves him throughout the novel. He does not kill to be mean. He was just put into situations where the only way out was to hurt the other person. I think he stayed the same all the way to the end. That is why he was chosen because he was the only one that would stay the course.
My favorite character in the book is Valentine. Although I don't feel as though I have as strong a connection to her as I do Ender, I greatly admire her support of Ender and what he does and the way she helps him to cope with the things he has gone through. I also think that she is a very intriguing character, in that I believe her mind is far deeper than the book allows us to see, and I wish there were a book in the series centered around her so that I could see how she really thinks and feels and what she experiences while Ender is away at Battle School, and after they decide to colonize together.
Valentine, although not the title character, is absolutely vital to the development of the story and of Ender as a person. She is the reason that Ender is able to have any sanity whatsoever after the things he experienced at Battle School. She is the loving and caring presence in life that Ender needs more than anything, because it doesn't come from anyone else around him. Even his parents aren't mentioned after Ender leaves for Battle School, not as it relates to Ender needing them to be parents for him. She is the reason that he is able to restrain himself from becoming what he always tells himself that he never wanted to be: a killer, like Peter; She is always the one who tells him that he is not and will not ever be like Peter is. They have a bond that even many siblings in the world today are never able to form with their brothers and sisters.
Valentine appears to do a lot of growing up in the story, learning how other people think, how their minds process information. She learns quickly that the world isn't going to be doing her any favors, and she will have to be very careful with who she trusts. The thing that strikes me most about Valentine though, is the way the she stays the same throughout the story: She always has faith in Ender as a person and will always be there for him no matter what. In that way, I know she will never change.
I think my favorite character is Valentine. I love how sweet she is and how much she loves Ender. It reminds me a lot of my relationship with my younger brother. She looks out for him when it comes Peter and keeps his head straight. If it wasn't for her, Ender would have never been able to move forward with the military school.
Ender is obviously the main character and everyone picks him as a favorite, as they should. He has a heart like Valentine, but fights like Peter. That is why he was chosen to do the job of "saving" them. He is incredibly strong minded and knows what is right and wrong. I love is attitude more than anyones. He is sensitive, but still knows when to stand up for himself. He tries to be more and more like Valentine everyday instead of Peter. In the end he ends up being who he wants and doing what he wants.
This will hopefully be a place for me to blog about literature, authors I love, and books I have just read. It will also be a communicative tool for myself and my students.
I am currently an adjunct professor at three different colleges: Northwest Shoals Community College, Columbia State Community College, and Itawamba Community College. This means my life consists of all things English related 24 hours a day.
