NW Shoals-Othello

What are your thoughts on Othello? After you have read the play, tell me the downfall of Othello? What does he suffer from the most? How is Iago the most important character in this play? What are your favorite parts of the play?

  1. Othello, as confident and strong as he seems, actually turns out to be not as confident as we were led to believe. If he was who he portrayed himself to be his own insecurities would not have gotten the best of him. He allowed Iago, an enemy in disguise, to brainwash him and to drive him into believing his wife had been cheating with one of his closest friends. If he thought his wife would have done that he wouldn't have married her in the first place. He allowed Iago to get inside his head enough to second guess himself. Othello allowed his ego and his pride to get in the way of his love. Iago was the instigator during the course of this play. There would not be a storyline, without him causing drama, if he was not in the play. Just like many people who we know today that are unhappy, he was so miserable he wanted everyone else to be miserable with him. My favorite part of the play is how othello uses his knowledge and kind words to convince everyone that he won the heart of Desdimona. But in the end, he's the one that ultimately destroys her heart, along with her life!

  2. That Othello seemed like a confident man with his wife, Desdemona. Who he seems to love very much. But in all ends, is manipulated by Iago making him be jealous of his wife.
Othello is not as strong as everyone claim he is to be.
Iago is the most important character in this play because he is the manipulater of the Moor. He tries to become like Othello and uses everyone to get what he wants. And ends up succeeding.
Where he is trying to change Desdemona mind, I think.

  3. I think that Orthello tried to see himself, and portray himself to others as a soldier's soldier. Strong, noble, and loyal. However he was none of those in the dealing with his so called "love," which was so easily manipulated by the most important and interesting of characters, Iago. Iago is by far my favorite character in this story, and each every scene where his double face is obvious, is my favorite scene. His completely lack of empathy towards other people, is what makes him so interesting, yet not very admirable.

  4. Othello's first downfall is his love for Desdemona. His love for her is blind and distracts him from the dramactic plots against him. The second downfall of Othello is the trust that he places in the people that suround him. Iago may not cast all the lines, but he definately baits all of the hooks. He knocks over the first dominoe in the chain of events that lead to Othello's demise. Most likely the other characters would not have acted out he events that occured if it were not for Iago's pompting.

  5. Othello is a very respected soldier and powerful man. He is easy prey for other because of him being from a different race and culture. Him being in love hurts him because he can not see that Iago is against him. Iago is determined to deceive Othello. Iago is motivated to delude him for many reasons. One of those reasons are a rumor that he has heard. He is brilliant in the way that he uses other people to delude Othello

  6. Iago wants vengeance on Othello because he was passed over as Othello's second for Michael Cassio, who although Iago has more experience, in war, Cassio got position because of his name. Plus, Iago is from the country and is angered that they would pick the black Moor over him. Iago's manipulative ways are easy to hide because he can deceive anyone. Iago uses each person's insecurities against them. They are his puppets and he is the master. Othello, although portrayed as a respected and valiant warrior, insecurities lie in the fact that he is black. Brabantio's statement to Othello, "Look to her Moor, if thou hast eyes to see. She has deceived her father, and may thee" (page 1294). Foreshadows how Iago plans to corrupt Othello's thoughts. He is able to build doubt around the virtuous Desdemona by deceiving all three men, Rodrigo, Cassio and Othello. To Rodrigo he tells him that Desdemona will grow tired of Othello and leave and then again he says that she is a wanton because she is going after Cassio, which only angers Rodrigo because he sees Cassio as another man standing in between him and Desdemona. Iago effectively makes Othello doubt Desdemona by turning the most innocent encounters between her and Cassio into something more. Othello believes Iago because she did deceive her father and just like she did to Brabantio she will do to him. Ultimately, Othello's downfall is the fact that he believes all men are honest and that they will not deceive him. He puts his trust in people he shouldn't and doubts the ones that actually love him. He is easily persuaded, which is strange because he is the man who leads others into battle and the person people look to. He fought so hard to show how Desdemona loved him, she knew all his faults and still looked over them, how could he question her love when she knew everything he was before they got married. If she wanted a man like Cassio or Rodrigo she could have had them. Instead, she chose to be with Othello. My favorite part of the story was the end because it shows how foolish and rash Othello was in his decision. He admits that he loved not wisely but too well and although he was not a jealous man was made jealous and he kills himself.

  7. Othello is a very strong willed character. He thinks of himself much more though. Othello finds himself in love, but he lets it slip through his fingers. Othello has a hard time in the play for having a different race. Iago betrays Othello by Iago being distrustful. Iago is important to the story because like all great piece of literary works there must be a antagonist.

  8. Othello was a man's man. He seemed to have every quality that any man could want; strength, bravery, a beautiful women, and anything he wanted was his. He seemed to be the perfect man, to not have any flaws, but there is no such thing as perfection. We learn Othello is easily manipulated by Iago to believe that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. This drives Othello into madness and eventually making him kill Desdemona. It is revealed that for some reason Iago has tormented Othello with the lies and Othello takes his life, rather than morn forever without Desdemona. It shows that everyone has their weaknesses.

  9. Othello was a valiant, brave, and courageous man. Every man has a downfall. Othello was gullible in a sense. He placed to much trust into people, especially his trust in Iago. By allowing Iago to have his trust, Iago then placed a wedge between Othello and the ones that he truly cared the most about. This wedge made Othello mad, he had no one at that point. Othello was too dependent towards people. My favorite parts of Othello, is when Iago easily manipulates all these fools in this story. People can be easily manipulated with the right amount of wits.

  10. On the surface Othello seems very strong and confident. He is in love with his wife Desdemona. During the play Othello starts believing lies that are told to him by Iago. Iago dislikes Othello and wants to be in his position but is not. Iago tries to ruin Othello by playing him. Iago is very important because he plays everybody in the play off each other.

  11. Othello tricks himself into thinking that he is a better, more confident man than he really is. Othello loves Desdemona, but strongly suffers from jealousy. Iago is such an important character in this play because he has developed this lie. Othello begins to believe Iago's lies, while distrusting his wife. Jealousy won this battle over his love for Desdemona. It amazes me that Iago is able to easily persuade everyone of his ideas.

  12. The play of "Othello" was rather interesting. Othello is a man who is a strong warrior has weak trust. As a very jealous person Othello believes more from what he hears from Iago. Iago is so important because he is where all of the trouble revolves around. I really did not have a favorite part of the play just because it was all a very good play.

  13. Othello to me was very interesting. Othello is a honorable man. He is also of color which in these times you didn't see many colored people marry white people. Othello's downfall is he is a very jealous person, an honest fool. Iago plays a big part in the play because of him people are being killed for reasons they shouldn't and he causees Othello to believe him and kill Desdemona. I guess my favorite part was when I thought Othello was going to believe Desdemona and not kill her, when he cries and she caresses his head. Little did I know that he would never let that happen. He had decided she had been unfaithful and nothing would change that.
